外國同事回應：That’s about the size of it.
奇怪了，剛剛完全沒有提到size，只說了專案時程，會不會是同事聽錯了呢？我們最熟悉size的意思是「尺寸、大小」，但其實size的意思很多，除了名詞，也有動詞用法。今天來看看size這個字的道地用法。
That’s about the size of it.
（X）尺寸大概就是這樣。
（Ｏ）整個形勢或情況就是如此／就是那麼一回事。
“That’s about the size of it.”這裡的size並不是尺寸大小，而是指「事情的實際狀況」（actual state of affairs）。這句話用來回應別人，表示，「沒錯，就是你想得那樣」。例如：
A: So you mean you won't come to the party with me?
（所以你沒法和我一起去參加派對了？）
B: Yes, that's about the size of it.
（對啊，就是這樣。）
How do you size up the chances?
（Ｘ）你要怎麼把機會擴大呢？
（Ｏ）你估計會成功嗎？
size up用作動詞，有「加大尺碼」的意思，例如：
These shoes are too tight. You need to size up at least a size or two.
（這雙鞋太緊了，你得換大1至2號。）
但size up還有一個更常見的用法，意思是「估計、品評」。想像一個畫面：你要和人打架之前，一定會先掂量對方體型大小，才知道自己勝算，size up就有這種意味。
The two cats walked in circles around each other, sizing each other up.
（2隻貓圍著彼此轉圈，並且互相打量著。）
We sized each other up at our first meeting.
（我們初次見面時相互打量了一番。）
Someone should cut that man down to size!
（Ｘ）應該有人改變他的尺寸。
（Ｏ）應該有人挫挫他的銳氣！
cut someone down to size是一種比喻性的說法，指教訓某人、讓人難堪、挫挫他的傲氣。看例句熟悉用法：
That remark sure cut him down to size.
（那句話肯定把他的氣焰打下去了。）
Your boss isn't just trying to cut you down to size, but actually to get rid of you.
（你的老板不僅僅是想要降低你的威信，實際上是要把你攆走。）
size用法注意
去店裡買鞋時，店員問“What size do you take?”
回答時很多人會直譯中文，例如：我穿9號，就說成：
（Ｘ）I wear 9 size.
中文說9號，英文要把size放前面，說成“I wear size 9.”
或者老外很常用的是：
（Ｏ）I am a 9.
直接省略了size。但注意要有冠詞a。
