Jane和外國同事聊到最近新加入的主管，外國同事形容新主管是「smooth operator」。Smooth operator？Smooth是平順、Operator是總機？難道這主管平步青雲，是從總機升上來的嗎？
Smooth常常出現英語對話中，除了形容表面光滑，還有許多生動的用法。若能活用，可以增添英語深度和趣味。
Smooth operator
（Ｘ）平穩的總機
（Ｏ）處事圓滑、辦事得心應手的人
你一定遇過這樣的人：處理複雜情況時顯得非常冷靜、熟練且高效，通常能巧妙的應對各種挑戰，這種人就可以用smooth operator形容。
He handled the negotiation like a smooth operator, securing a great deal for the company.
（他像個老練的談判專家一樣處理了談判，為公司爭取到了很好的條件。）
Smooth operator通常是正面或中性的。但根據情境，過度老練也可能暗示這個人過於狡猾或油滑。
Smooth talker
（Ｘ）講話平順的人
（Ｏ）能言善道、圓滑的人
Smooth原意是「平滑、光滑」，也可以用來形容人的講話和寫作風格，指「聲音柔和、文體流暢」。
Smooth talker通常有負面含義，指此人會用花言巧語來說服別人，可能是不誠實或不可信賴。
The director is so smooth that many of his colleagues distrust him.
（這個總監非常圓滑，他的很多同事都不信任他。）
Everyone knows he’s a smooth talker. He can convince anyone to buy anything.
（大家都知道他是個能言善道的人，他能說服任何人購買任何東西。）
Smooth Sailing
（Ｘ）平穩出航
（Ｏ）事進展順利，沒有遇到任何困難或障礙。
Smooth sailing源自航海，原來是「航行順利，風平浪靜」，引申為「任何事情進展順利、沒有遇到困難」。
Once we solved the initial problems, the rest of the project was smooth sailing.
（一旦解決了初期問題，接下來的項目就一帆風順了。）
Smooth Over
（Ｘ）躺平
（Ｏ）平息問題、掩飾問題、打圓場
Smooth over接近中文說的「打圓場」，指用「交談、溝通的方式緩解或淡化矛盾」。
Would you like me to try to smooth things over between you and your colleague?
（需要我來嘗試緩和一下你和你同事之間的關係嗎？）
Don't worry about missing the application deadline—we'll smooth that over with the office.
（別擔心錯過申請截止日期——我們來跟公司協調解決的。）
Smooth over還有一個從淡化矛盾延伸出來的意思，指「掩飾問題」。
I tried to smooth over the awkwardness of this first meeting.
（我試圖掩飾初次會面時的不自然。）
