一個外籍朋友請David他幫忙介紹客戶，一番談話之後，外籍朋友對他說：“I count on your good offices.”
David非常納悶，難道他想和公司合作嗎？
這裡的office和辦公室無關，注意，這裡的offices是加了“Ｓ”的複數。
I count on your good offices.
（Ｘ）我想和你的公司合作。
（Ｏ）我指望你的幫忙。
Office的意思很多，在口語中，如果前面加上形容詞good，並且加上“s”變成複數，就有了「服務、幫忙」的意思。英英字典裡的解釋：the influence or power that someone has and can use to help others. （可以用來幫助他人的影響力或力量）
再來看一個例句：
I got the job through the good offices of a friend.我透過朋友的幫忙找到這份工作。
再來看幾個很容易搞錯的office用法：
run for office
（Ｘ）跑去辦公室
（Ｏ）投入競選
這裡的office指的是職位，經常是重要、有權有勢的職位，人才要run for，跑著過去。
再看一例：
Bob plans to run for office next year. Bob準備明年參選。
理解 run for office 的意思後，就不難理解 take office 是就職：
The President takes office two months after the election. 總統於選後兩個月就職。
in office
（Ｘ）在辦公室
（Ｏ）任職、執政
“In office”是指在位、掌權，比較抽象，和“in the office”（在辦公室裡）這個具象的意思不同。
Some people think she has been in office for too long. 有人覺得她在位太久了。
既然 in office 是掌權，也就有out of office，意思是「不在位」：
The Socialist Party has been out of office for almost ten years.社會黨在野已經將近10年了。
land-office business
（Ｘ）辦公室房產業務
（Ｏ）大生意，好買賣
一般我們說的 land office 是地政事務所，但 land-office business 是延伸的意思，和土地沒有關係，指短期內湧進大量業務。
We always do a land-office business at this time of year. 每年的這個時候我們總是生意很興隆。
